Course Description

May 19, 2025 | 8–11 AM (3 hours) | $5 = 1 entry | More donations = more chances to win!

This hands-on workshop is designed for beginners with little to no experience using industrial sewing machines. Participants will learn the basics of machine operation, safety protocols, and foundational sewing techniques while working on a guided project to create their own tote bag. This workshop is part of a fundraising event to support the victims of Lapu Lapu Day. All proceeds will be donated to Support for Lapu Lapu Victims and Families- Vancouver Police Foundation

Course Outline

1. Introduction & Orientation (15 minutes)

• Welcome and overview of workshop objectives
• Introduction to industrial sewing machines and their applications
• Overview of machine types (e.g., straight stitch, overlock)

2. Understanding the Machine (25 minutes)

• Identifying machine components and their functions
• Threading the machine and bobbin winding
• Adjusting stitch length, tension, and presser foot pressure

3. Safety & Best Practices (15 minutes)

• Safe operation procedures
• Common beginner mistakes and how to avoid them
• Proper posture and ergonomic techniques

4. Hands-On Practice & Core Techniques (45 minutes)

• Practicing straight and curved stitching
• Understanding seam allowances and stitch control
• Backstitching, sewing corners, curves, and edges
• Basic troubleshooting (e.g., tension issues, skipped stitches)

5. Tote Bag Project (50 minutes)

• Guided construction of a simple tote bag
• Cutting, pinning, and assembling fabric panels
• Attaching handles and finishing seams
• Applying all techniques from the session

6. Wrap-Up & Next Steps (30 minutes)

• Presentation and review of finished projects
• Recap of key concepts and techniques
• Tips on machine maintenance
